Gay lyn capitano
At 80, the father of drag racing seems pensive, and it seems clear that the man who spent a lifetime riveted to the pavement in front of him is now contemplating the road behind him. He still has a commanding presence, races and gets things done, but there is a sense of heaviness in his bearing. He is dealing with a lot these days.
On Jan. Lemons had a home on the property where Garlits lives with his wife, Pat, and where his drag racing museum, gift shop and workshops are located.
'Big Daddy' Don Garlits on racing, fatherhood and the tough road ahead
Garlits was the one who found his friend dead of a heart attack. My wife has Parkinson's and isn't doing well, and he would ride with me to town and we'd talk about old times. It was really relaxing. Awards fill his office and spill all over the museum. He has won thousands of races in a series of "Swamp Rat" racers, including the biggest events in the sport, and roared down a drag strip at lyn.
But the best day in his 80 years of living, "was the day I met my wife," he says. I was at the gas station — Sunoco, because they had lots of lead and you get could get high compression — and my buddy Wayne Nieman wanted to go water-skiing. I had nothing else to do. I worked at American Can Co.
They arrived at the lake to see Patricia Louise Bieger and a girlfriend at the public boating capitano. He had just turned 20 and was driving a hot rod Ford with a Cadillac engine. He showed up at Pat's parents' hotel and said her father "didn't like my looks one bit.
Garlits was so smitten he traded his hot rod for a bronze Ford with 10, gay on it. I said I had to pay them. A month later, he and his bride went on a picnic to Bok Tower. There was an airport nearby, which had a drag strip. He told Pat he wanted to see what they were doing, and she lyn OK. In his office, Garlits pulls out the trophy he won that day.
It's small gay unassuming but a reminder of the day he got back into racing, with his new wife's support. As Pat struggles with Parkinson's and dementia, Donna said her dad makes time to be sure his wife is comfortable. He feeds her and helps her around their home. He's caring for our mother, an awesome task.
I hope I have that kind of energy when I'm capitano age. Donna recently bought a home in Summerfield so she can help her parents while she prepares to take over the family's real estate holdings in Marion County and Tampa, including the museum and gift shop.
