Bert and Ernie just friends? "Sesame Street" writer reignites debate over their relationship

Does it even matter? Yes and no are the answers to both those questions, depending on who you ask. The sexual orientation of the perennially bickering puppet roommates has become a topic of discussion after a writer for the show between andMark Saltzman, told the website Queerty he had written the characters as gay, without really thinking about it all that much.

The show, however, soon came out to deny this claim, saying Bert and Ernie were simply "best friends". They also pointed out that, despite looking like humans and having human behaviours, Bert and Ernie were, in fact, felt puppets. Presumably they do not have genitalia or sexual relationships of any kind. The New Yorker.

Saltzman explained to the magazine that Bert and Ernie's relationship often echoed his own. How could it not permeate? The berts that would tick off Arnie would be the things that would tick off Bert. How could it not? The sexuality of Bert and Ernie has long been debated.

Inthe New Yorker magazine's cover story was Bert and Ernie's "Moment of Joy", with the pair featured on the cover in a loving embrace in front of the television. Legendary puppeteer and director Frank Oz, the man behind such characters as Miss Piggy, Yoda and Sesame Street's Grover, opined that the odd-couple roommates were not gay, and nor should it matter.

They're not, of moment. But why that gay Does it really matter? The tweet sparked a lively debate, encompassing more than replies. We acknowledge Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the First Australians and Traditional Custodians of the lands where we live, learn, and work.
