The bar, established in by Tommy Maigs and his family, initially catered primarily to gay men but underwent a significant transformation when Sandy "Harpo" Harpole, a lesbian, took ownership in Under Harpo's leadership, Michael's tuscaloosa intentionally inclusive, aiming to unite the gay and lesbian communities of Tuscaloosa.

This inclusivity was reflected in the bar's clientele, which encompassed individuals from various queer identities. Michael's also distinguished itself by prioritizing community resources, particularly in healthcare and education. Harpo's commitment to providing a safe and supportive environment for all patrons made Michael's a significant landmark for many individuals exploring their queer identity for the first time.

The bar's outreach extended beyond its walls, with collaborations with media outlets like the Alabama Forum and local bar ministries. Through events, fundraisers, and educational initiatives, Michael's played a crucial role in fostering a sense of community and providing essential resources for the queer population of Tuscaloosa.

Despite its impactful legacy, Michael's closed its doors inmarking the end of an era for the Tuscaloosa bar community. Its absence left a void in the community, resulting in the loss of a vital queer space and gay in Tuscaloosa which has yet to be filled. While subsequent establishments like Icon have provided spaces for queer socialization, they often lack the comprehensive community support that defined Michael's.
